Costs of Reproduction Among Rhesus Macaque Females on Cayo Santiago

چکیده

Reproduction is energetically costly for mammalian females during the periods of gestation and lactation and, consequently, is likely to be associated with reduced survival (Stearns 1989, 1992 ; Roff 2002 ) , particularly when maternal condition is poor. Higher mortality may be associated with birth-related complications, but it also may be the consequence of elevated circulating levels of cortisol suppressing immune function (see McEwen et al. 1997 , for a review). If the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis is hyperactivated in post-partum females during prolonged periods as a result of either the energetic demands of lactation or the associated psychosocial stressors, immune function may become impaired, potentially making females more vulnerable to diseases and to increased risk of mortality. Survival costs of reproduction have been documented for a few mammalian species. Among seasonally breeding Columbian and Richardson’s ground squirrels ( Spermophilus columbianus and Spermophilus richardsonii ), adult female mortality is highest in the birth season and during the period of lactation (Michener and Locklear 1990 ; Michener 1998 ; Neuhaus and Pelletier 2001 ) . Among baboons ( Papio spp . ), mortality rates are highest among lactating and pregnant females (e.g., Cheney et al. 2004 ) . The terminal investment and senescence hypotheses both predict that the costs of reproduction should increase with age. According to the senescence hypothesis,

Inbreeding avoidance in rhesus macaques: whose choice?

Whether nonhuman primates avoid copulating with close kin living in their social group is controversial. If sexual aversion to relatives occurs, it should be stronger in females than in males because of females' greater investment in each offspring and hence greater costs resulting from less viable offspring. Data presented here show that adult male rhesus macaques breeding in their natal group...

Factors affecting the distribution of copulatory plugs in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) on Cayo Santiago.

Although the proximate mechanisms behind the formation of copulatory plugs are well understood, their distribution and function among primates remain largely unstudied. During a study of female rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) mating behaviour on Cayo Santiago, we examined the pattern of the distribution of visible copulatory plugs among females and their potential relationship to female reprodu...

Effects of reproductive condition and dominance rank on cortisol responsiveness to stress in free-ranging female rhesus macaques.

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis modulates individuals' physiological responses to social stress, which is an inevitable aspect of the daily lives of group-living animals. Previous nonhuman primate studies have reported that sex, age, rank, and reproductive condition influence cortisol levels under stressful conditions. In this study we investigated cortisol responses to stress amo...

A decade of theory of mind research on Cayo Santiago: Insights into rhesus macaque social cognition.

Over the past several decades, researchers have become increasingly interested in understanding how primates understand the behavior of others. One open question concerns whether nonhuman primates think about others' behavior in psychological terms, that is, whether they have a theory of mind. Over the last ten years, experiments conducted on the free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) liv...

Multiple sirehood in free-ranging twin rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Rhesus macaque females regularly copulate with a number of partners, and produce a single offspring per reproductive cycle in over 99% of cases. We used genotyping of 10 STR markers to determine paternity in the Cayo Santiago population of rhesus macaques. About 1,500 monkeys have been analyzed to date, with their marker genotypes entered into a computerized database. These data enable us to re...
